Description Drawing on Indigenous peoples' struggles against settler colonialism, Theft Is Property! reconstructs the concept of dispossession as a means of explaining how shifting configurations of law, property, race, and rights have functioned as modes of governance, both historically and in the present. Through close analysis of arguments by Indigenous scholars and activists from the nineteenth century to the present, Robert Nichols argues that dispossession has come to name a unique recursive process whereby systematic theft is the mechanism by which property relations are generated. In so doing, Nichols also brings long-standing debates in anarchist, Black radical, feminist, Marxist, and postcolonial thought into direct conversation with the frequently overlooked intellectual contributions of Indigenous peoples.
Description By the end of the 19th century, British imperial medical officers and Christian medical missionaries began to introduce Western medicine to Tibet, Sikkim and Bhutan. Their Footprints Remain uses archival sources, personal letters, diaries, and oral sources in order to tell the fascinating story of how this once-new medical system became imbedded in the Himalayas. Of interest to anyone with an interest in medical history and anthropology, as well as the Himalayan world, this volume not only identifies the individuals involved and describes how they helped to spread this form of imperialist medicine, but also discusses its reception by a local people whose own medical practices were based on an entirely different understanding of the world.
Description Research on molecule-based magnetic materials was systematized in the 1980s and expanded rapidly. A Special Issue focusing on molecule-based magnetic substances was published in Magnetochemistry. However, the functionalities of the substances increase daily; therefore, the researchers’ quest is not yet in decline. Research on molecule-based magnetism developed across many fields, including chemistry, physics, material chemistry, and applied physics, and the use of the various functionalities of these molecule-based magnetic substances has greatly influenced research on spin-based devices. In honor of Professor Masahiro Yamashita, who contributed greatly to this field, I have put together a Special Issue that highlights ten groundbreaking articles. The issue is entitled, “A Themed Issue of Functional Molecule-Based Magnets: Dedicated to Professor Masahiro Yamashita on the Occasion of his 65th Birthday”. I wish to thank the authors for their dedicated work, and the referees and editorial staff for the time they invested commenting on the articles.
Description This monograph is the first comprehensive appraisal of Theodor Fontane`s complete works of art criticism in all its relevant contexts. It situates Fontane`s writings on art between the realms of the Berlin School`s fully differentiated academic art scholarship and that of feuilleton art criticism, and includes references to his personal writings and fictional works.
Description The years leading up to World War I were very influential for Theodor Heuss' development. As a school pupil in Heilbronn, a student in Munich and Berlin, and an editor in Berlin and Heilbronn, he made experiences that were to prove decisive for his later career. Besides politics he was also especially involved in the fields of visual art, literature and journalism. He continually advocated a radical departure from the German Kaiser Reich, perceiving it as authoritarian, and was farsighted in his later comments on the disaster of World War I.
Description Theodor Heuss was an extraordinarily versatile citizen and committed democrat who defended the Weimar Republic through all its crises. From 1918 onwards he worked as an editor and official in the Guild of German Writers. In addition, he was committed to education in citizenship and worked indefatigably as a writer and public speaker. It was above all as a left-wing liberal member of the German Parliament from 1924 onwards that Heuss fought for the beleaguered democracy until the end of the Weimar Republic. These 229 selected letters by Theodor Heuss - most of them published for the first time - reflect the interactions between his exciting biography and the dramatic times and events from the last year of the First World War to the investment with power of the National Socialists in January 1933. 229 letters, most of them published in this edition for the first time correspondence with the political, intellectual and artistic elite of the Weimar Republic part from their significance as an historical source, the letters display a high literary quality
Description Theodor Heuss is one of the most significant founders of German politics' new political beginning in Germany. As a liberal party politician and leader of the Württemberg-Baden Kultministerium (ministry of culture) he gained respect in all four occupied zones. He faced his most important task during 1948/49 in the Parlamentarischer Rat (parliamentary council), where he made an essential contribution to the creation of the constitution. Both as a journalist and an educator for democracy, Heuss advocated a moral reformation and the ruthless examination of crimes committed by the German people under the National Socialist regime.
Description Under the National Socialist regime, Theodor Heuss was rapidly forced onto the defensive. He lost nearly all his public offices and posts, yet as a publicist Heuss continued to defend his liberal convictions. We encounter a member of the educated middle classes who attempted to carve out space for himself in a hostile political environment. These 194 selected letters, most of them previously unknown, reflect his gripping biography and the dramatic course of events from the handing over of power to the National Socialists in January 1933 to the end of the war in 1945.
Description After his time in office as Federal President came to an end, one would hardly describe Theodor Heuss as living a life of retirement. He traveled, wrote books and articles, voiced his opinions on political and social issues in lectures, and not least, was an indefatigable correspondent. During the last four years of his life, Heuss remained a sought–after figure in public life whose opinions drew wide attention in Germany and abroad.
Description Bernd's study shows how Storm's "Novellen" are made purposeful by the operations of a fictional intelligence, haunted by the fear of passing time. The author challenges the traditional belief that Storm's narratives are products of a sentimental mind. No other discussion of Storm's tales, be it analysis of an individual narrative or collective treatment of several or all of them, seeks to interpret them with such specific emphasis upon their fictional, omniscient narrator. This concentration on the fictional narrator also leads into a study of Storm's subjective narrative form.
Description These six essays elucidate some of the more significant aspects of Storm's literary technique. The treatments of some of Storm's "Novellen", including "Am Kamin", "Aquis Submersus" and two versions of "Immensee", show how Storm used structure, symbolism, elements of tragedy and other narrative devices in his prodigious body of works of German Realism.
Description "A critical edition, with English translation and notes, of chapters 27–60 of the Semeioseis gnomikai (“Sententious notes”), a collection of 120 essays by the Byzantine statesman and scholar Theodore Metochites (1270–1332). The edition is based on three manuscripts, which are briefly presented in the introduction. P (Par. gr. 2003, Paris) and M (Marc. gr. 532, Venice) were both written in the early fourteenth century; E (Scor. gr. 248, Escorial) is a sixteenth-century copy of M. After the edition, with accompanying English translation and notes, the book is concluded with a bibliography and three indexes: of quoted passages, Greek words, and Greek names. Several of the essays in this volume contain laments on the reduced state of the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantium), and on the vicissitudes of human life and fortune. A group of short essays describe the pleasure of beholding Creation and one of the longest discusses the pros and cons of having been born, i.e. of life."
Description "This volume contains a critical edition, with an English translation and notes, of 20 chapters of the Semeioseis gnomikai (""Sententious notes"") of the Byzantine statesman Theodore Metochites (1270-1332). The introduction gives an extensive, partly new, description and assessment of the manuscripts as physical objects and in their relationship to each other. The manuscripts discussed, and used in the edition, are the Par. gr. 2003 (P) and Marc. gr. 532 (M), both of the fourteenth century, and, wherever M is illegible, the Scor. gr. 248 (E), a sixteenth-century copy of M. In the edition, the reading of P (including the corrections by the main copyist, Michael Klostomalles, as well as a manus secunda) is generally adopted as the authoritative text. The volume concludes with a bibliography, an index of passages, and an index of names. The discussion in the essays touches upon several subjects, more or less related to each other. Among these are the ignorance of man and the difficulty to know anything, and the moral side of seeking an active life as opposed to ""living hidden""."
