Description This Portuguese contribution to the debate on the concept of “Empire” brings together 17 essays covering various areas and periods across Antiquity. Biblical sources allow us to structure various categories and organize their related meanings as valuable paths to inform our understating of the idea of “Empire”. Egypt first serves as the opportunity to inquire the usefulness of “Empire” as a concept within the larger discussion of periodization in History, as well as the scope and limitations of its definitions, as the observed political dissolution in the Late New Kingdom shows. Regarding Ancient “Mesopotamian Empires”, the first “Empire” is usually attributed to the political formulas brought forth by the dynasty of Akkad, which emerged before the hegemony of Babylon. The underlying ideology to Hammurabi’s social and military policies through two crucial moments in Babylonian History provides the ground to analyze the emergence of its first hegemony: the war with Elam and the expedition to the Kingdom of Larsa. Approaches to the Anatolian and the Phoenician/Syrian-Palestinian territories follow a methodology focused on myth and religious narratives and the traces of political realities found there, as well as a reflection on the validity of “imperialism” when applied to the Phoenician colonial world. Later Mesopotamian imperial formulas are analyzed within the context of violence, military and ritual: on Jeremias and the rationale for a heavenly justified submission of Judah to the so-called “Neo-Babylonian Empire”; on Nabonidus, the last king of this dynasty; and on the diverging behavior of both Nabonidus and Cyrus to the cult of Marduk. Herodotus, a privileged source for the classical perception of eastern formulas, displays the Persian Empire as the background for different Greek political proposals at play (famously in 3.80-82), and informs us of the queenship and the queens of Ancient Persia. Moreover, the role and status of women in Hellenistic societies is further examined, most notably in its relations to power. The last four essays propose a conceptual genealogy for the idea of imperium through the Roman World: from the representation Ancient Historiography creates of the processes structuring Roman “imperialism” and their agents; the interpretation Suetonius proposes of imperial power and how it ought to be used; to the validity of a certain notion of “globalization” applied to the Late Roman expanse.
Description The present work offers the first translation into Portuguese of the oldest Greek gastronomic text that has come down to us, albeit only in fragmentary form. The poem written by the Sicilian author Archestratus (4th century BC) is an account of the sophisticated food eaten by the aristocratic elites with enough economic power to buy the most expensive ingredients (such as high quality fresh fish) and to undertake the gastronomic tours implied in the text. In chapter I, a survey is offered of the biographical data pertaining to the author and of the transmission and reception of his work up to the present day. This is followed by the translation of the 60 fragments (chapter II), with notes and photographs that illustrate some of the dishes. In chapter III, a detailed analysis is offered of the poem’s contribution to the historical study of food in ancient Greece. Here, “Archestratus’ cuisine” is considered from five perspectives: produce, culinary methods, utensils, furniture and production agents. Attention may be drawn to the use of maps showing the whereabouts of ingredients used in the confection of the recipes present in the work and a detailed study of the terminology used in the poet’s kitchen. Extra features in the book are appendices with some of the recipes, updated according to modern standards; bibliography (editions and secondary literature); and indices of the food-orientated fauna and flora mentioned (in Portuguese, with Latin scientific name and Greek term).

Description This book analyses the Portuguese context of one of the most important urban systems of medieval cities – that which resulted from the settlement of the mendicant orders and which would leave a profound mark on the urban landscape. The case studies to be considered are the monastic systems established from the 13th to the 15th centuries in the principal cities and towns in Portugal: Lisbon, Santarém, Coimbra, Oporto, Évora and Guimarães. Following the initial analysis which examines the processes of how the monastic systems were formed, an assessment of the impacts that these systems had on the urban space will be made, namely in relation to the role they played in the spatial dynamics which characterised Portuguese cities in the Late Middle Ages. This book intends to address two fundamental concerns: to include a critical analysis of the Portuguese case amongst the academic work in this field produced on a European level and to offer a contribution to the affirmation of the importance of the “mendicant phenomenon” on the history of the city and urbanism in Portugal.

Description „Arranged Love“ deals with cross-cultural differences in understanding romantic love. All over the world we can find ideas of romantic love expressed by arts, poetry or material objects. The present publication attempts to show the varieties of romantic love exemplified by artifacts of Ethnographical collection of the Göttingen University’s Institute for Cultural and Social Anthropology.
Description Arrest chemokines are a small group of chemokines that promote leukocyte arrest from rolling by triggering rapid integrin activation. Arrest chemokines have been described for neutrophils, monocytes, eosinophils, naïve lymphocytes and effector memory T cells. Most arrest chemokines are immobilized on the endothelial surface by binding to heparin sulfate proteoglycans. Whether soluble chemokines can promote integrin activation and arrest is controversial (Alon-Gerszten). Many aspects of the signaling pathway from the GPCR chemokine receptor to integrin activation are the subject of active investigation. Leukocyte adhesion deficiency III is a human disease in which chemokine-triggered integrin activation is defective because of a mutation in the cytoskeletal protein kindlin-3. About 10 different such mutations have been described. The defects seen in patients with LAD-III elucidate the importance of rapid integrin activation for host defense in humans. We welcome reports that help clarifying this crucial first step in the process of leukocyte transendothelial migration.
Description "The Ars Edendi Lectures have been organized by the research programme at Stockholm University funded by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond during the years 2008-2015, with a focus on editorial methods for dynamic textual traditions of medieval Greek and Latin texts. This fourth volume gathers contributions both on the fundamentals of editing, as in Glenn Most ‘What is a critical edition?’, and looking at specifics such as marginalia (Teeuwen), errors (Maggioni), musical notation (Atkinson). Two papers focus on digital tools in editing Greek (Dendrinos) and Latin and early Romance (Robinson) texts. Richard Janko describes the challenges in making out words in Herculaneum papyri. Both traditional and innovative approaches are contemplated in this rich and varied collection by leading experts in the field of editing."

Description This publication presents results of an interdisciplinary field study assessing the contribution of biological and inorganic processes in the mobilisation and accumulation of arsenic in groundwater of the Bengal Delta Plain, West Bengal. Investigations were focussed on the distribution of arsenic in sediments and shallow groundwater of two representative study sites. All results were combined in an effort to develop a conceptional model describing the mobility of arsenic in West Bengal aquifers.
Description The spatial variability of dissolved arsenic (As) concentrations in aquifers was studied near Ha Noi, Vietnam. The goal was to identify major geochemical, sedimentological and hydrochemical differences between high and low As regions. Also, the behaviour of As and other elements during sequential extractions was characterized with micro synchrotron XRF analysis. Based on the results a conceptual model was developed which could explain the current situation on site and in other affected areas.
Description Emerging forms of alternative economy are changing the structure of society, redefining the relationship between centre and periphery in the urban fabric. In this context, the arts can play a crucial role in formulating a concept of complex and plural citizenship: This economic, social and cultural paradigm has the potential to overcome the conventional isolation of the arts and culture in ivory towers, and thereby to gradually make the urban fabric more fertile. This volume faces such sensitive issues by collating contributions from various disciplines: Economists, sociologists, urbanists, architects and creative artists offer a broad and deep assessment of urban dynamics and their visions for years to come.
